The 6mm BR Norma, while known for its dominance in mid- to long-range precision competition, also performs impressively when loaded with lighter varmint-class bullets. Berger’s 60 grain flat base varmint bullet transforms this typically match-focused cartridge into a fast, flat-shooting round ideal for predator control and small-game hunting at short to mid-range distances.

The 60 grain Berger varmint bullet offers rapid expansion upon impact, making it highly effective on soft targets such as prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and coyotes. Its flat base design promotes excellent short-range accuracy and consistent groups, particularly when paired with fast-burning powders and shorter barrels. Though this bullet weight is not common in F-Class or PRS applications, it serves a practical purpose in field use or for shooters seeking reduced recoil and high-speed impacts.

For optimal performance, powders such as Varget, Benchmark, H322, and IMR 8208 XBR are frequently used. Depending on powder selection, charge weights typically range between 28.0 and 31.0 grains, producing velocities from 3250 to 3500 fps from a 24–26" barrel. The cartridge’s inherently efficient case design and small primer pocket support reliable ignition and excellent case life, even under fast-burning powder pressures.

The fast twist rates commonly found in match rifles (1:8" or 1:7") are not ideal for stabilizing 60 grain bullets; however, in rifles with 1:12" or 1:10" twists—more typical in varminting platforms—this load can achieve spectacular accuracy. Bullet seating depth should be tailored to each chamber, though most factory chambers will allow for relatively normal COAL without infringing on case capacity.

Recoil is significantly reduced compared to heavier match loads, making this load ideal for younger shooters or for high-volume shooting sessions where barrel heat and fatigue are concerns. Accuracy potential with the 60 grain Berger has been noted at sub-½ MOA with tuned loads, especially when using high-quality brass and consistent primers like the Federal 205M or CCI BR-4.

Though niche within the BR Norma world, the 60 grain Berger load gives new life to this cartridge for practical field use and high-speed fun, offering shooters a balance of velocity, low recoil, and devastating terminal effect on varmints.
