5.56 NATO / 5.56mm NATO (Parker-Hale CGP) The 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge — more commonly called 5.56 NATO — has been the backbone of modern military and tactical rifle platforms since its formal NATO standardization in the late 1970s. Originally developed from the .223 Remington case for use in select-fire rifles like the M16, it was designed to offer controllable recoil, flat trajectories, and effective terminal performance at typical infantry engagement distances. By the early 1990s, the round had also become deeply entrenched in civilian shooting disciplines, especially semi-automatic sporting rifles. One notable civilian adaptation and performance evaluation appeared in Rifle Issue #135 – May 1991, where Parker-Hale’s Chassis Gun Product (CGP) system was evaluated specifically with the 5.56 NATO platform. Parker-Hale’s CGP was a modular rifle configuration intended to provide precision performance from standard NATO calibers, and 5.56 NATO was one of the foundational cartridges tested. The chassis system allowed the rifle to be customized for hunting, competition, or tactical applications while retaining the 5.56 NATO’s core characteristics: efficient ballistics, relatively mild recoil, and broad ammunition availability. Rifles rigged in the Parker-Hale CGP configuration were often fitted with 16- to 20-inch barrels — a length that balanced velocity, handling, and barrel harmonics to maximize accuracy in practical field conditions. The 5.56 NATO cartridge performs most effectively when the barrel length allows a near-complete powder burn. While the original U.S. military configuration used 20-inch barrels to extract maximum velocity from 55-grain M193 or 62-grain M855 projectiles, many civilian and match shooters prefer slightly shorter 16- to 18-inch barrels. In Parker-Hale’s evaluation, 5.56 NATO loads from a 16-inch barrel in a CGP setup consistently delivered credible accuracy and reliable performance. The 5.56’s ballistic advantages — including modest recoil and flat trajectory — made it an excellent choice for modular rifle systems like the CGP. 5.56 NATO’s success in the CGP and other precision rifle experiments stems from its balance of velocity and controllability. With 55-grain bullets, velocities in a healthy 16-inch barrel regularly approached 3,000 feet per second, while heavier match or tactical payloads (like 69- or 77-grain projectiles) remained supersonic well past 500 yards when paired with the right twist rate (often 1:7 or 1:8). The Parker-Hale evaluation underscored the importance of twist selection and quality barrels: rifles with fast twists were better able to stabilize the heavier bullets that had grown in popularity for long-range or precision work. From a handloader’s perspective, the 5.56 NATO case is highly versatile, and the CGP evaluations in *Rifle Issue #135* reinforced that handloaders can tailor the cartridge to specific roles — from varmint hunting to competition shooting. Selection of powders such as Hodgdon H335, Varget, or Benchmark in concert with quality bullets from 55 grains up through the 77-grain class allowed shooters to optimize the case for a given barrel length and application. Proper load development was shown to reduce extreme spread (ES) and standard deviation (SD) numbers on chronographs, translating to better downrange performance from modular platforms like the Parker-Hale CGP. One enduring takeaway from the article is that, while the 5.56 NATO began as a military intermediate cartridge, its adoption into precision-oriented civilian platforms demonstrated its broader ballistic utility. In Parker-Hale’s chassis-based test bed, the 5.56 NATO proved it could deliver consistent groups, dependable feeding, and good terminal performance when custom-built rifles were optimized around it — further cementing the cartridge’s place not only on the range but also in the hands of competitive and field shooters alike. |
