5.56 NATO / 5.56mm NATO (Barnes Data - 2010) The 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge, developed from the earlier .223 Remington, was standardized by NATO in the late 1970s and has since become the dominant intermediate rifle cartridge used by Western militaries. While both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO cartridges are dimensionally similar, the NATO round is loaded to higher pressures and requires a slightly longer leade in the chamber to accommodate its military performance demands. In 2010, Barnes Bullets released updated loading data for 5.56 NATO, geared particularly toward semi-automatic platforms and tactical shooters. Barnes' 2010 data focused heavily on their solid copper bullet lines, including the well-known TSX (Triple-Shock X) and newer TTSX (Tipped TSX) bullets. These monolithic projectiles were designed to deliver deep penetration, controlled expansion, and high weight retention, making them ideal for barrier penetration and hunting applications alike. The 5.56 NATO platform benefited from these developments, especially in AR-15s with 1:7 or 1:8 twist barrels optimized for heavier bullet weights. The Barnes data outlined performance metrics for bullets ranging from 45 to 70 grains, though most optimized loads were in the 62 to 70 grain range. For instance, a common loading for the 62-grain TSX over 25.0 grains of TAC powder produced velocities near 3,050 fps from a 20-inch test barrel, while the 70-grain TSX could reach around 2,850 fps with similar powders. These velocities typically drop by 75–125 fps when fired from a standard 16-inch barrel, but still remain highly effective. Barnes emphasized that due to the higher pressures of the 5.56 NATO, handloaders must use true NATO-spec cases with reduced case capacity in mind. Cases such as Lake City and other military brass can affect pressure levels compared to commercial .223 brass, and this is especially important when using compressed charges or maximum load data. Primers should also be selected for their hardness, as floating firing pins in AR-15 platforms can lead to slam-fires if softer primers are used. One notable takeaway from the Barnes manual was the superior terminal performance of their monolithic bullets in 5.56 NATO. While traditional jacketed soft points often struggle with fragmentation or jacket separation at higher velocities, the TSX line demonstrated reliable penetration through intermediate barriers, such as plywood, automotive glass, and light armor. This made the 5.56 NATO more viable as a law enforcement or hunting round when paired with Barnes projectiles. In terms of accuracy, Barnes bullets delivered sub-MOA performance in well-built rifles with quality optics. Although their longer-for-weight design required faster twist rates to stabilize, shooters using modern 1:7 twist AR barrels reported excellent results. Load tuning was still necessary, as the bearing surface of solid copper bullets tends to produce more barrel friction, and pressure signs must be monitored carefully. The 5.56 NATO with Barnes 2010 data represents a step forward in modernizing the round for tactical, hunting, and precision shooting use. It showcases the evolution of the cartridge beyond its military roots, proving that with the right bullet construction and powder selection, the 5.56 NATO can perform well beyond expectations. As always, Barnes recommends starting 10% below the listed maximum and working up carefully, especially when using NATO brass or short barrels. |
