5.56 NATO / 5.56mm NATO (16-inch barrel) (Handloader TV)
Warning! A Custom AR-15 built by Finks Custom Gunsmithing with a KE Arms KP-15 Polymer 1 piece lower and an Aero Precision upper receiver. The barrel was made by Proof Research and is carbon fiber wrapped and has a 1:8 twist rate and is 16-inches in length, chambered in 223 Wylde. A Leupold Patrol 6HD 1-6x 24mm scope was mounted in a Leupold Mark AR mount. CCI 400 primers and Starline 5.56 cases used throughout. Range conditions: Distance to the target was 100 yards and Oehler Model 35P chronograph was set up 10 feet from the muzzle to record all velocities. Temperature was 51 degrees Fahrenheit, winds 7-10 miles per hour, humidity of 16.6 percent, altitude of 5,000 feet and pressure was 25.24 in HG.

Cartridge History

5.56 NATO / 5.56mm NATO (16-inch barrel)
Also known as: 5.56x45mm NATO, 5.56mm, .223/5.56 Carbine Load

The 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge, often referred to simply as “5.56 NATO,” is one of the most widely used small-caliber military rifle cartridges in the world. It shares much of its DNA with the .223 Remington, but is not identical—the NATO version is loaded to higher pressure specifications and features a slightly different chamber design. The 16-inch barrel variant has become the de facto standard for civilian AR-15 platforms due to both legal regulations and practical performance benefits.

The 16-inch barrel length offers a sweet spot between compact handling and ballistic efficiency. Originally, the M16 series of rifles used 20-inch barrels to maximize velocity and accuracy. However, with the emergence of the M4 carbine (which uses a 14.5-inch barrel), many civilian shooters adopted the 16-inch barrel to avoid the legal hurdles of owning a short-barreled rifle (SBR) under the National Firearms Act (NFA). While shorter than the original military standard, the 16-inch barrel retains sufficient length to stabilize most 5.56mm bullets, particularly with 1:7 to 1:9 twist rates.

Ballistically, the 5.56 NATO cartridge performs well from a 16-inch barrel. Standard 55-grain M193 ball ammo can reach muzzle velocities of approximately 3,100 feet per second (fps), while the more modern 62-grain M855 “green tip” typically achieves around 2,950 fps. Heavier match bullets—such as 69, 75, and 77-grain projectiles—still maintain respectable velocities in the 2,600 to 2,800 fps range from this barrel length, allowing for accurate engagement at extended ranges and better energy retention.

The 5.56 NATO in a 16-inch platform is particularly favored for its versatility. It is light-recoiling, affordable, and widely available. The barrel length allows for a complete powder burn with most commercial and military powders, reducing muzzle flash and maximizing pressure for proper cycling in both direct impingement and piston-driven rifles. This length also avoids the excessive gas port erosion seen in shorter barrels while still being significantly lighter and more maneuverable than the traditional 20-inch rifle setup.

One important consideration is chambering: rifles intended for 5.56 NATO must be clearly marked as such. Although .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO appear nearly identical, the NATO version has higher pressure and a longer leade. Firing 5.56 NATO in a .223 chamber is not recommended due to the risk of increased pressure. Many manufacturers now offer .223 Wylde or hybrid chambers that safely accommodate both.

The 16-inch barrel has proven ideal for many applications, from civilian sporting use and home defense to law enforcement and tactical roles. It balances muzzle velocity with portability and is often used with free-float handguards, optics, and suppressors without compromising performance. Reloaders appreciate the 5.56 NATO's flexibility in bullet weight and powder selection, particularly for 16-inch configurations where tuning for intermediate-range accuracy and reliable cycling is essential.

As a platform, the 5.56mm NATO with a 16-inch barrel has become the modern standard for general-purpose rifles. It has endured decades of evolution and continues to prove itself as an efficient, controllable, and accurate choice for a wide range of roles. Whether for competitive shooting, training, or duty use, this configuration represents one of the most optimized and proven formats available today.
