.223 Remington (5.56mm)

The .223 Remington, often synonymous with the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge, is one of the most widely used rifle cartridges in the world. Originally developed in the late 1950s by Remington and Fairchild Industries in conjunction with Armalite for military use, it was adopted by the U.S. military as the 5.56mm NATO round. Civilian adoption soon followed under the .223 Remington designation, and it quickly became a staple in varmint hunting, competitive shooting, and self-defense.

Though similar in appearance and often interchangeable in casual use, there are technical distinctions between the .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO rounds. The military 5.56mm cartridge is typically loaded to higher pressures and may have longer leade (freebore) in the chamber, making true 5.56mm ammunition potentially unsafe to fire in chambers marked only for .223 Remington. However, rifles chambered in 5.56 NATO can safely fire both .223 and 5.56, while those chambered in .223 should stick to .223-spec ammo unless specifically rated otherwise.

Performance-wise, the .223 Remington typically launches 55-grain bullets at around 3,200 feet per second (fps) from a 20-inch barrel, delivering flat trajectories and moderate recoil. Heavier bullets in the 62 to 77-grain range are common for longer-range or match-grade applications, especially when used in rifles with faster twist rates (e.g., 1:7" or 1:8"). Popular powders for reloading .223 include Hodgdon H335, Varget, and Benchmark, and the cartridge is widely supported by die manufacturers, bullet makers, and brass producers.

The .223 Remington’s versatility is unmatched, with usage in everything from prairie dog hunting to three-gun competition. Its relatively mild recoil, high velocity, and accuracy potential have made it a favorite among AR-15 platform shooters and bolt-action varmint hunters alike. Furthermore, its widespread availability and low cost have ensured its continued dominance in the American shooting landscape.
