.22 K-Hornet (Handloader issue #333)
Warning! A Custom Martini .22 K-Hornet with a 24-inch barrel was a used to test all loads. Federal GM205M primers were used throughout. Accuracy is the measurement of one, 5-shot fired at 50 yards. Velocities are the average of five rounds chronographed at 10 feet. COAL (inches) 1.723 except where noted in remarks.

Cartridge History

.22 K-Hornet (Handloader Issue #333)

The .22 K-Hornet is revisited in Handloader Issue #333 – August, 2021. This article presents modern load tests comparing the improved (K) Hornet chamber against standard Hornet configurations, exploring performance gains, component sensitivity, and real-world shooting behavior.

Using bullet weights in the 35- to 45-grain range, the published loads in the article show verified velocity gains of 80 to 140 fps over equivalent standard Hornet loads. Powders tested include Lil’Gun, IMR 4227, and W-296. Many of the K-Hornet loads retained excellent group sizes, particularly in barrels with proper twist rates and refined chamber tolerances.

One of the notable observations is an increase in sensitivity to seating depth and neck tension, especially in tight chambers. While the improved geometry yields gains, the margin for load variation is tighter, meaning handloaders need to be methodical when adjusting bullet jump or working with different brass lots.

Overall, the Handloader #333 feature reaffirms the practical advantages of the K-Hornet for shooters seeking a performance boost in the Hornet platform, with realistic cautions about increased tuning demands.
