.22 Hornet in a Browning 1885

In Rifle Issue #201 – May 2002, the .22 Hornet was tested in a Browning Model 1885 single-shot rifle to evaluate its performance in a classic, strong, single-shot action. The Browning 1885’s inherent rigidity and strong lockup allow the Hornet cartridge to shine, especially with carefully tuned handloads. The article highlights how this combination, with proper tuning, can rival modern varmint rifles in accuracy and consistency.

The test loads included mid-weight bullets—primarily in the 35- to 45-grain range—paired with clean-burning powders such as Lil’Gun, IMR 4227, and H-110. In the 1885, many of the loads produced group sizes that rivaled those of modern bolt rifles, illustrating how a well-configured classic firearm can remain competitive when devoted reloading is applied.

One important observation was the Browning’s sensitivity to seating depth, neck tension, and chamber alignment. Because the 1885’s single-shot breech leaves no magazine feed forces, handloaders had more leeway to experiment with bullet jump and alignment. Some loads improved significantly when bullets were seated just off the lands, yielding tighter groups with equivalent velocities.

Though not every load tested was optimum, the Browning 1885 setup demonstrated that the .22 Hornet can deliver exceptional performance when paired with a strong, well-fitted single-shot action and precise load development.
