.22 Hornet Youth / Reduced Loads (Accurate Data)

“Youth” or reduced loads for the .22 Hornet are formulated to produce lower recoil, gentler sound, and safer pressures—ideal for young or beginner shooters. While these are not always listed in every reloading manual, **Accurate Data** and community sources provide conservative starting points intended to preserve brass, reduce wear, and maintain accuracy at moderate ranges.

Typical reduced loads use lighter bullets—often in the 35 to 40 grain range—and powders such as Lil’Gun, H-110, or lower charges of IMR 4227. A common tactic is to start at 10–20% below the standard published loads and stay within that margin to ensure safety and comfort. Velocities will necessarily be lower than full loads—often in the 2,300 to 2,600 fps range depending on barrel length—but still effective for small game or target shooting inside 150 yards.

Because reduced loads operate well below maximum pressure, bullet jump and seating depth are more forgiving. Nonetheless, careful case prep, consistent primer seating, and minimal sizing remain important to maintain accuracy. Many shooters report superior feel and group consistency using reduced loads for regular plinking or training.

While not explicitly documented in every Accurate Data edition, such “youth” or reduced approaches are consistent with the philosophy of starting low, working slowly, and emphasizing consistency over raw velocity. These loads offer a safer, gentler path into Hornet shooting—especially for newer shooters or light rifles.
