Cartridge History
.22 Hornet (Speer TNT Green HP Data)
The .22 Hornet sees excellent performance with Speer’s 30-grain TNT Green Hollow Point — a lead-free, frangible varmint bullet designed for rapid expansion and minimal ricochet. Its ultra-lightweight construction allows for higher velocities than traditional 40–50 grain projectiles while maintaining flat trajectories and explosive terminal effect on small game. Using Hodgdon’s Lil’Gun, one of the most efficient powders for light bullets in the Hornet, velocities exceeding 3,100 fps are achievable without breaching SAAMI pressure limits. The manual recommends a starting charge around 11.0 grains, working up to 13.0 grains, with best accuracy often found near the mid-to-upper range depending on barrel length and throat dimensions. Other compatible powders include H110, AA1680, and IMR 4227. While H110 delivers similar velocity potential, Lil’Gun often offers more consistent pressures and reduced temperature sensitivity — a notable benefit for field use in variable conditions. IMR 4227 is typically favored for moderate-speed, highly accurate loads, especially in older rifles with tight chambers. The 30-grain TNT Green HP also demonstrates excellent performance in single-shot or bolt-action rifles like the Ruger 77/22 Hornet, CZ 527, and Thompson/Center Contender. Minimal fouling and uniform expansion make it ideal for ethical varmint hunting in areas with lead restrictions. Due to the bullet’s low mass, reloaders are advised to ensure proper neck tension and crimping to avoid setback or inconsistencies during feeding. Light bullets can be sensitive to ignition and seating depth variations, so careful adjustment and chronograph validation are encouraged when working up loads. Overall, the Speer TNT Green HP transforms the .22 Hornet into a blisteringly fast, environmentally friendly option for small game — offering modern performance from a classic cartridge platform. |
