.22 Hornet (Load Development)
Warning! A Taurus Raging Hornet .22 Hornet 8-shot revolver with a 10-inch barrel and a Tasco 1.25-4x 28mm Pronghorn scope was used to test all loads. Used Remington (30- through 35-grain bullets) and Winchester (40- and 45- grain bullets) brass and Remington No. 7½ Bench Rest Primers were used to assemble all loads.

Cartridge History

.22 Hornet (Load Development)

The .22 Hornet is one of those cartridges where successful load development hinges on attention to the small things. Its modest powder capacity, relatively thin brass, and sensitivity to pressure spikes make it a rewarding—but sometimes finicky—round to work with. Precision handloading can turn the Hornet into a tack-driver for varmints, small game, or informal bench work.

Most handloaders begin their development with bullets in the 35- to 45-grain range, since these weights balance velocity and accuracy well within the Hornet’s operating window. Lighter bullets can often be driven faster, but heavier bullets like 50- or 55-grain designs may require slower-burning powders and careful seating to maintain case capacity and pressure consistency.

Powder selection is critical. Popular choices include Lil’Gun, IMR 4227, H-110, and Accurate 1680—all of which provide reliable ignition and consistent velocities. Lil’Gun, in particular, has built a strong following for Hornet loads due to its combination of speed and pressure control, though some rifles may prefer older standbys like 2400 or H-4198 depending on barrel twist and chambering quirks.

Seating depth plays a surprisingly large role in .22 Hornet accuracy. Because of the cartridge’s relatively long throat and thin neck, many shooters report improved groups when bullets are seated just off the lands (typically 0.010" to 0.020"), but this varies by rifle. Too deep, and accuracy often degrades; too shallow, and case tension becomes unreliable. Neck tension should also be kept consistent—uniform sizing and annealing practices are beneficial in getting repeatable results.

Primers also matter more than one might expect. Standard small rifle primers are typical, but some handloaders prefer magnum versions for better ignition with slow-burning powders. As always, pressure signs should be closely monitored, especially given how quickly the Hornet’s pressure curve can spike with very small powder changes.

Overall, load development for the .22 Hornet demands patience and careful logging. Small changes in powder charge—often just 0.1 grains—can result in major shifts in velocity or group size. Shooters looking to dial in their load will benefit from ladder testing at known distances and paying close attention to chronograph data. The reward is a classic cartridge that punches above its weight when tuned properly to the rifle and use case.
