Cartridge History

.22 Hornet (34/35 GR Using Nosler Bullets)

When loading the .22 Hornet with 34- and 35-grain Nosler bullets, handloaders can achieve outstanding varminting performance in a compact, low-pressure cartridge. These lightweight projectiles—often designed with polymer tips or hollow point configurations—maximize the Hornet’s available case capacity while delivering flat trajectories and explosive expansion on small game.

Nosler’s 34-grain Ballistic Tip and 35-grain Varmageddon are popular choices in this weight class, both offering high ballistic coefficients (for their size) and rapid expansion even at the moderate velocities produced by the Hornet. These bullets typically perform best in the 2600–3000 fps range, depending on barrel length and powder selection. Optimal accuracy is often achieved with powders like Hodgdon Lil’Gun, H-110, IMR 4227, and Accurate 1680, all of which can safely push these bullets to high velocities while maintaining consistent pressure signs.

The .22 Hornet’s small case volume and relatively thin brass walls mean that precise powder measurement is essential—especially with fast-burning powders. Many experienced handloaders also prefer using small pistol primers instead of small rifle primers to promote more consistent ignition, particularly in colder temperatures or with lighter powder charges.

Crimping, neck tension, and bullet seating depth play major roles in extracting the best from these Nosler bullets. Due to the fragile construction and sharp ogive of these varmint-oriented bullets, excessive seating depth or overly aggressive crimping can damage the bullet or affect consistency. It’s often best to start with a light taper crimp and test small increments in seating depth to identify the sweet spot for your rifle.

For field applications, these 34/35-grain Nosler loads are extremely effective on varmints like ground squirrels, prairie dogs, and foxes—offering explosive terminal performance with minimal recoil and relatively quiet report. Their high velocity and accuracy potential allow for confident hits out to 150–200 yards with proper wind reading and drop compensation.

Whether shooting from a vintage bolt-action Hornet or a modern single-shot or repeater, Nosler’s offerings in this weight class give reloaders an excellent option for efficient, high-performance varmint loads that make the most of the .22 Hornet’s charming balance of power and precision.
