.22 Hornet (.224-Inch Bullets)

The .22 Hornet, while originally designed around .223-inch bullets for early rifles, has evolved in modern applications to use .224-inch bullets—more consistent with today’s .22 centerfire standards. Most contemporary firearms chambered for the Hornet are built with .224-inch groove diameters, offering handloaders a wider bullet selection, enhanced ballistic coefficients, and better terminal performance in hunting and varminting roles.

Loading the .22 Hornet with .224-inch bullets opens up a broad range of bullet designs, including polymer-tipped varmint rounds, flat-base soft points, and even lightweight hollow points. The cartridge typically performs best with bullets in the 35- to 46-grain range, balancing velocity with manageable pressures and preserving case and barrel life. When tuned properly, these loads can reach velocities in the 2600–2900 fps range from a 22-inch barrel, with minimal recoil and excellent precision for small game or pest control at moderate ranges.

Powder selection is critical due to the Hornet’s small case capacity and thin brass walls. Popular choices include Lil’Gun, H-110, Accurate 1680, IMR 4227, and Winchester 296. Lil’Gun, in particular, has gained popularity among reloaders for offering top-end velocities with lower pressure signs and longer case life. Because the Hornet is relatively sensitive to small charge variations, consistent powder measurement and careful crimping or neck tension are essential.

Many handloaders report tighter groups using small pistol primers instead of small rifle primers, which can reduce shot-to-shot variance in ignition. However, primer selection should be tested carefully depending on powder burn rate and lot-to-lot brass variations. The .22 Hornet case also benefits from minimal resizing and occasional annealing to prevent neck splits and improve longevity.

In terms of practical use, the .22 Hornet loaded with .224-inch bullets makes for an excellent truck gun or walking varmint rifle. Its light report, modest recoil, and respectable downrange accuracy make it a pleasant and effective cartridge for those who need precision at moderate ranges without stepping into larger centerfire territory. While often overshadowed by more modern cartridges like the .204 Ruger or .223 Remington, the Hornet’s efficiency and low-pressure design remain compelling for reloaders seeking a refined, classic experience with modern component flexibility.

Reloading data from sources like Hodgdon, Accurate, and Nosler often reference .224-inch bullets as standard for current production rifles, and bullet manufacturers continue to offer purpose-built projectiles specifically tuned for Hornet velocities and energy ranges.
