.22 ARC / .22 Advanced Rifle Cartridge (Handloader issue #352)

.22 ARC / .22 Advanced Rifle Cartridge (Handloader issue #352)
Warning! A custom rifle built on a Pacific Tool & Gauge Drakkar Action with a 20-inch Proof Research barrel (1:7 twist) with a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-18x 52mm scope mounted in Leupold Mark 4 rings was used to test all loads. Resized Lapua 6.5 Grendel cases and Federal 205M primers were used throughout. All loads were assembled using Hornady dies in an Area 419 ZERO Reloading Press. All powder was weighed and dispensed on an RCBS MatchMaster and charge weights were accurate to .04 grains. The temperature was 82 degrees Fahrenheit while the wind was 6 mph. The humidity was 42 percent, the altitude was 5,000 feet and pressure was 30.21 in HG as measured by a Kestrel 5700. Velocity is the average of 30 rounds recorded on a Garmin Xero C1 Pro Chronograph.
Cartridge History
The .22 ARC (Advanced Rifle Cartridge) continues to solidify its role as a high-performance, high-velocity round designed to maximize ballistic efficiency and terminal performance in both semi-automatic and bolt-action platforms. In testing featured in Handloader issue #352, this innovative cartridge once again demonstrated its potential across a range of bullet weights and powders, delivering impressive precision, speed, and consistency—especially at extended distances. The cartridge was tested using a precision-built bolt-action rifle based on a Pacific Tool & Gauge Drakkar action, featuring a 20-inch Proof Research carbon-fiber barrel with a 1:7 twist. Optics were provided by a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-18x 52mm scope, offering excellent clarity for precise shooting. All loads were handloaded using Hornady dies in an Area 419 ZERO press, with powder charges dispensed to a meticulous ±0.04 grain tolerance via the RCBS MatchMaster scale. Test data was collected using a Garmin Xero C1 Pro Chronograph, with environmental conditions monitored by a Kestrel 5700. The setting—a high desert plateau at 5,000 feet elevation—provided a stable testing ground with moderate 6 mph wind, 82°F temperature, and 42% humidity. All rounds were assembled with resized Lapua 6.5 Grendel brass and Federal 205M match primers, emphasizing consistency. The 62-grain Hornady ELD-VT bullet paired with Accurate AAC-2230 powder stood out for both speed and precision. Top velocities reached 3,584 fps with a 31.0-grain charge, and group sizes as tight as 0.47 inches were recorded, showcasing the cartridge’s varminting and mid-range target capabilities. Shifting to heavier projectiles, the 70-grain Nosler RDF mated with Shooters World Long Rifle powder offered exceptional balance. At a max charge of 31.5 grains, velocity reached 3,126 fps with a tight 0.73-inch group, and the best group came with a 30.5-grain charge at 0.38 inches. These results are indicative of the .22 ARC’s ability to stabilize longer, high-BC bullets even at modest case capacities. For those interested in high-weight match bullets, the 90-grain Hornady A-Tip paired with Alliant RL-15.5 TS and Winchester StaBALL Match powders brought additional insights. The RL-15.5 loads topped out at 2,894 fps while maintaining sub-MOA accuracy, with one standout group measuring just 0.32 inches. Meanwhile, StaBALL Match performed respectably, with a 28.7-grain charge producing 2,861 fps and a 0.80-inch group. Throughout this round of testing, the .22 ARC proved highly adaptable to different bullet types and propellants. It’s clear that this cartridge isn’t just a niche wildcat—it’s a robust, modern alternative for shooters looking to go beyond the .223 Remington. With the ability to handle long, high-BC bullets in a standard AR-15-length action, the .22 ARC gives precision shooters and varminters alike a fresh edge. The consistent theme across all load data was excellent velocity, repeatable precision, and flexibility in bullet weight from 62 to 90 grains. Whether it's for paper-punching, predator control, or long-range steel, the .22 ARC continues to impress as a future-proof performer.
