.219 Zipper Pet Loads

The “Pet Loads” section for the .219 Zipper in Handloader Issue #52 – November, 1974 offers gentle, accurate load data tailored for shooters who prioritize precision and rifle preservation over pushing the outer limits. These loads are especially well-suited for older rifles, vintage lever actions, or those simply wanting mild recoil and consistent performance day in and day out.

Bullet weights in the Pet Loads range typically around 45 to 52 grains, using Hornet, Sierra, or similar varmint-style projectiles. Powders used are conservative: choices like W-296, IMR-4198, and similar medium-burn rate propellants were common, helping maintain clean burning, safe pressure margins, and manageable muzzle energy.

Velocities from these loads generally fall in the 2,700-to-3,100 fps range depending on barrel length, bullet profile, and seating depth. Accuracy in many cases was observed to be very good at 100 yards, with shooters reporting tight shot groups under typical field or benchrest conditions—especially when cases were properly trimmed and primers matched.

These loads are often selected because they produce mild recoil, reduced muzzle blast, and less barrel wear, which help hunters and target shooters alike. “Pet Loads” for the Zipper are typically run with ammunition that remains comfortable to shoot over longer sessions, without sacrificing the trajectory or terminal performance needed for small game or varmints.

Seating depth, cartridge overall length (COAL), primer choice, and consistent brass prep play big roles in how well these loads perform. Small changes in bullet jump to the lands or in powder charge can noticeably affect group size, so testers in the publication emphasized starting conservatively and adjusting loads gradually.
