.218 Bee: Sako L-46

The Sako L-46 is one of the factory rifles that was chambered for the .218 Bee, introduced in Finland shortly after World War II. Known for its excellent craftsmanship, solid bolt design, and fine-fitted stock, the L-46 gave handloaders and shooters one of the better factory platforms to experience what the .218 Bee cartridge could really do. Compared to earlier lever-action rifles, the bolt-action L-46 tends to allow better bullet seating, more consistent chamber alignment, and tighter tolerances, which translates into improved accuracy.

Sako’s L-46 rifles chambered in .218 Bee usually came with barrel lengths around 24 inches, varying depending on the specific version. Owners report that group sizes in well-maintained Sako L-46 rifles, with quality barrels and good handloads, often outperform many standard rifles of the same cartridge. The bolt action and rigid stock help reduce recoil disturbance, making follow-up shots more consistent and allowing .218 Bee’s inherent accuracy – which can be shadowed by less stable platforms – to shine through.

With the .218 Bee in a Sako L-46, lighter bullet weights (35- to 46-grain) tend to produce the best practical performance, particularly in varmint hunting or small game work. The precision of the L-46 tends to tolerate more aggressive loads and finer bullets, while still preserving accuracy. Many shooters with L-46s note that handloads tuned for seat depth, neck tension, and using match-grade primers yield visibly tighter groups than what’s often seen in lever-actions or less rigid rifles.

The Sako L-46 also benefited from Sako’s reputation for good barrel finish and fit; the barrels tend to ship with a smooth bore and excellent chamber alignment, which helps in reducing barrel fouling and enhancing accuracy. This is particularly important with .218 Bee, which can be sensitive to barrel condition and load consistency. Shooters with L-46 rifles note that even moderate loads in the Bee produce sufficient velocity, accuracy, and terminal effect, balancing performance and barrel life.

Though detailed factory-tested load data specific to the .218 Bee in L-46 rifles isn’t always available, historical reloaders often reference L-46 performance as among the top for the Bee cartridge. The rifle remains a sought-after example for custom work or restoration for those interested in vintage precision as well as those who want a finely built rifle that rewards handloading effort.
