.204 Ruger: Enhanced Efficiency with Hodgdon CFE 223

Since its introduction in 2004, the .204 Ruger has become a favorite among varmint hunters and precision shooters for its blistering speeds, flat trajectories, and minimal recoil. When paired with Hodgdon’s CFE 223 powder, this cartridge gains even greater efficiency, cleaner operation, and extended barrel life—enhancements that make it an even more appealing choice for high-volume shooters and accuracy-focused handloaders.

Hodgdon’s CFE 223 was developed with Copper Fouling Eraser technology, designed to minimize copper deposits in the bore and maintain accuracy over long shooting sessions. For the .204 Ruger—often used in high-volume varminting and target applications—this translates to cleaner barrels, more consistent shot placement, and reduced maintenance between outings. The result is a cartridge and powder pairing that keeps rifles performing at their best even during extended use.

In terms of performance, the .204 Ruger loaded with CFE 223 delivers excellent velocities across a range of bullet weights. With lighter projectiles in the 32- to 34-grain range, speeds can exceed 4,000 feet per second, offering blistering flat trajectories. Heavier bullets in the 39- to 40-grain class maintain excellent stability and energy retention at longer distances, making this load ideal for both close-range pest control and extended-range shooting.

Handloaders will appreciate how well CFE 223 complements the .204 Ruger’s efficient case design. The powder’s consistent burn characteristics and temperature stability make it easy to develop accurate, repeatable loads. In addition, its clean-burning properties help reduce fouling, preserving both accuracy and barrel life—a valuable benefit for shooters who log hundreds of rounds in a single session.

In the field, this combination delivers the explosive terminal performance that varmint hunters expect, along with the precision needed for small-target engagement at challenging ranges. At the bench, its consistency and easy load development make it equally suited for precision shooting and experimentation.

Overall, the .204 Ruger paired with Hodgdon’s CFE 223 offers a powerful blend of speed, accuracy, and low-maintenance operation. For handloaders and hunters alike, it’s a versatile and high-performing combination that keeps rifles shooting cleaner, longer, and more consistently.
