Cartridge History

.19 Calhoon: A Precision Wildcat with Practical Roots

The .19 Calhoon is a unique wildcat cartridge developed by James Calhoon in the early 1990s as a high-velocity, flat-shooting round intended primarily for varmint hunting. Based on the well-established .22 Hornet case, necked down to accept a .198-inch bullet, the .19 Calhoon bridges the performance gap between the smaller .17 caliber and more common .22 caliber rounds. With its focus on velocity, accuracy, and minimal recoil, it has gained a modest but loyal following among precision shooters and handloaders who appreciate its niche performance profile.

At its core, the .19 Calhoon was born from a desire to refine the capabilities of the classic .22 Hornet platform. By reducing the bore diameter and making minor adjustments to the case neck and shoulder, Calhoon was able to create a cartridge that offered significantly higher velocities—often exceeding 3,700 feet per second—while maintaining excellent terminal performance for small game and pests. The .19 caliber bore, though unusual, provided a unique balance: bullets were light enough for high-speed travel but retained more mass than comparable .17 caliber options, improving energy retention and wind resistance.

The proprietary nature of the cartridge meant that rifles chambered in .19 Calhoon were limited and often custom builds. Calhoon himself offered converted CZ 527 bolt-action rifles, which quickly became the go-to platform for shooters interested in the round. These rifles, known for their inherent accuracy and smooth operation, helped define the .19 Calhoon’s reputation for exceptional precision and shootability.

Ballistically, the .19 Calhoon stands out in the varmint cartridge world. It offers flat trajectories with minimal bullet drop at common ranges, making it ideal for prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and similar-sized targets. Its mild recoil makes follow-up shots easy and comfortable, especially when compared to larger varmint calibers. The cartridge’s efficient powder burn also results in less barrel wear and fouling, a trait that handloaders and high-volume shooters have come to value.

However, being a wildcat cartridge, the .19 Calhoon requires a more hands-on approach. Factory ammunition is not commercially available, so shooters must handload their rounds using specialized .19 caliber bullets, typically supplied by Calhoon himself. Brass is often formed from .22 Hornet cases, a process that demands precision and care. Despite these barriers to entry, many who adopt the .19 Calhoon find the experience rewarding and the performance well worth the effort.

Today, while it remains a niche cartridge, the .19 Calhoon is still respected by a small but passionate community. Its blend of speed, accuracy, and practicality exemplifies the kind of innovation that wildcatting brings to the shooting world—offering performance where standard calibers may fall short.
