Cartridge History

.17 Remington

The .17 Remington Was Introduced In 1971 By Remington Arms As A Factory-Loaded, High-Velocity Small-Caliber Cartridge. Based On The .223 Remington Case Necked Down To Accept A .172-Inch Diameter Bullet, It Was Designed Specifically For Varmint Hunting, Offering Extremely Flat Trajectories And Explosive Terminal Performance On Small Game.

Capable Of Launching 20- To 25-Grain Bullets At Muzzle Velocities Exceeding 4,000 Feet Per Second, The .17 Remington Became One Of The Fastest Commercially Available Cartridges Of Its Time. Its High Velocity Translates To Minimal Bullet Drop At Extended Ranges, Making It Exceptionally Effective For Predators Like Coyotes, Foxes, And Groundhogs.

However, The Cartridge's Benefits Come With Certain Trade-Offs. The Small Bore Diameter And High Velocity Lead To Rapid Fouling Of The Barrel With Copper Deposits, Requiring More Frequent Cleaning. Additionally, Due To The Small Bullet Mass, Wind Drift Can Affect Accuracy At Longer Ranges More So Than Larger-Caliber Counterparts.

Despite These Considerations, The .17 Remington Has Maintained A Loyal Following Among Precision Shooters And Predator Hunters. Its Commercial Availability, Combined With Reloading Flexibility, Allows Enthusiasts To Tailor Loads For Specific Conditions. In The World Of .17-Caliber Cartridges, The .17 Remington Stands As The Benchmark — Combining Factory Support, Exceptional Speed, And Proven Field Performance.
