| Warning! Notes: Test rifle was a Kimber Model 84, 22-inch sporter barrel, 10-inch twist, reformed .221 Remington brass (turned necks) and Remington 6 1/2 primers used for all loads. All powder charges should be reduced by at least 10 percent for starting loads in other rifles. Chronograph was an Oehler 33 with Skyscreen spacing of 10 feet. Readings taken with the start screen 10 feet from the rifle's muzzle. Temperatures, 40 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. |

Cartridge History
.17 Mach IV (25 Grain Bullets)The .17 Mach IV has always been known for pushing the boundaries of small-caliber performance, and when loaded with 25-grain bullets, it finds a sweet spot between blistering speed and downrange stability. Originally formed by necking down the .221 Remington Fireball, the cartridge’s compact design provides superb efficiency, making it a favorite among high-velocity varmint shooters. When paired with a 25-grain projectile, the .17 Mach IV offers improved ballistic coefficient over its lighter bullet counterparts, resulting in better wind resistance and energy retention at longer ranges. Though slightly slower than the ultra-light 20-grain loads, the 25-grain options can still exceed 3,700 fps with the right powder combinations — offering more consistent terminal performance on medium-sized varmints. Reloaders favor this setup for its versatility. Powders such as H4198, Benchmark, and Accurate 2015 provide excellent case fill and clean ignition. Seating depth, primer choice, and case uniformity remain critical when working with such small calibers, especially as pressure tolerances can rise quickly with minor adjustments. This particular bullet weight demands barrels with slightly faster twist rates — usually 1:9 — to ensure proper stabilization. When matched with a quality rifle and properly tuned handload, the .17 Mach IV with 25-grain bullets becomes a precision tool capable of half-MOA or better accuracy at 100 yards. It’s a combination that balances speed, control, and terminal effect better than many factory options. Though the Mach IV has been largely overshadowed by its commercial sibling, the .17 Remington Fireball, dedicated handloaders continue to keep this wildcat alive, especially with proven bullet weights like the 25-grain class. Its legacy is rooted in precision and performance — and with the right components, it still delivers both in abundance. |
