Cartridge History

.17 Bumble Bee (Hodgdon Pistol Data): Small Cartridge, Serious Curiosity

The .17 Bumble Bee is one of the more eccentric footnotes in the world of wildcat cartridges — a tiny round born from experimentation and driven by the pursuit of ultra-light recoil, extreme velocity, and efficient powder burn. Originally developed by necking down the .22 Hornet case to accept .17-caliber bullets, the Bumble Bee finds a strange harmony between novelty and niche effectiveness.

What makes this version stand out is its compatibility with Hodgdon’s line of pistol powders — an unconventional pairing that nonetheless yields impressive results. Thanks to the cartridge’s compact case capacity and low expansion ratio, fast-burning pistol powders such as Hodgdon’s HP-38 or Titegroup can be used effectively to launch 20-grain bullets at speeds hovering near 3,000 fps. The result is a round that’s incredibly soft-shooting and surprisingly flat in trajectory out to short-to-mid ranges.

Though not widely adopted, the .17 Bumble Bee has developed a small following among reloaders who value the challenge of working with such a delicate wildcat. Brass is typically fire-formed from .22 Hornet cases, and careful attention is needed to avoid overpressuring the tiny chamber. Still, in a custom rifle with a tight-twist barrel, the Bumble Bee can offer stellar accuracy and minimal fouling — making it ideal for indoor testing, small varmint control, or simply as a conversation piece at the range.

Hodgdon’s data brings legitimacy to this unusual cartridge, providing reliable load recipes and pressure-tested guidance in an otherwise experimental space. For those willing to step outside the mainstream, the .17 Bumble Bee delivers performance that’s far more than just a novelty.
