Warning! Reduce all loads 10 percent and work upward. If any componets are substituted for those listed, or if the overall length of the assembled cartridge is decreased, reduce starting loads an additional five percent. All loads in the table were assembled using fireformed brass. Do not use above loads in unfireformed brass. All muzzle velocities rounded off to the nearest 5 fps. All loads assembled in Winchester cases primed with CCI-400 primers.

Cartridge History

.17 Ackley Hornet: Subtle Power in a Classic Wildcat Form

The .17 Ackley Hornet is a refined wildcat cartridge born from the classic .22 Hornet. Modified by P.O. Ackley, it’s necked down to accept .17-caliber projectiles and improved with a sharper shoulder angle and reduced body taper. These design changes increased powder capacity and efficiency, giving the cartridge new life as a fast, flat-shooting round for small game and varmint applications.

This cartridge shines in its balance — delivering high velocity with minimal recoil, making it perfect for extended shooting sessions or younger shooters learning precision marksmanship. With typical bullet weights in the 20-grain range, the .17 Ackley Hornet routinely achieves speeds around 3,500 fps. That speed, combined with the small bullet diameter, results in minimal pelt damage while maintaining clean, humane kills on small varmints like ground squirrels, prairie dogs, and jackrabbits.

One of the greatest advantages of the .17 Ackley Hornet is its low noise and powder usage. Compared to centerfire magnums or larger varmint rounds, it offers impressive efficiency — both in terms of ballistics and reloading economics. This makes it a favorite among handloaders who want consistent performance without burning through expensive components. It’s particularly useful in areas where noise-sensitive hunting or high-volume shooting is expected.

Rifles chambered in .17 Ackley Hornet are most often custom builds or rebarreled actions, with barrel twists matched to ultra-light .17-caliber bullets. Reloaders generally form brass from standard .22 Hornet cases, fire-forming them to Ackley specs. While this extra step takes some effort, the payoff is a uniquely capable cartridge that offers precision and economy in equal measure.

Though it remains a niche cartridge, the .17 Ackley Hornet continues to hold a strong following among experienced varmint shooters. Its combination of old-world charm and modern performance makes it more than just a wildcat curiosity — it's a functional, effective, and rewarding cartridge for those who appreciate the subtleties of reloading and the art of precision shooting.
